When it comes to Christmas songs, the more the merrier is my view, which is lucky because Sarah Reeves‘ Christmas album is called More the Merrier!  Eight songs in length, the tracks are split evenly between original and well known classics, all delivered with more than a hint of sultry, smoky tones.

The album leads from the front with a merry, jazzy title track that, despite being an original song, gives us what we love in a Christmas song, namely a great sing a long tune with lyrics and music that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Bing Crosby film. ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’ follows straight after, to emphasise the timeless quality of the original song.  ‘Winter Wonderland‘ has the same feel, with the addition of Clark Beckham to make a well harmonised duet.

My favourite song on More the Merrier is an original song, ‘Snow Globe‘, in which Sarah smoothly conveys the joy of the season and capturing the moment.  Snow globes are held in affection by many people worldwide and the track is helped along by the irresistible image of snow falling inside a globe.  Similarly, ‘Sentimental’ takes us into the world of Christmas traditions and the importance of these things to young children; anyone who has spent any part of Christmas Eve with young children knows that the “waiting for Santa” traditions are just as important, maybe even more so, than Christmas Day itself. It’s my favourite part of Christmas.

More the Merrier was released on vinyl on 8 October 2022 on Curb Records. Get your copy here.
