Optivion is a duo consisting of Alex (lead vocalist, percussion, harmonica, guitar) and Rie (backing vocalist).

Alex is from Atlanta, Georgia and Rie is from Japan. They met in Tokyo and released an album called Free Unicorn in February 2015. The band is now getting more exposure in Florida.

Before you read on, Optivion is giving a FREE download of “Free Unicorn”, the signature single from the album, to Angry Baby readers. If you’re not already subscribed to Angry Baby, just pop the email address that you’d like it delivered to here and it will be on its way to you straight away, together with a bumper collection of music that has been shared by Angry Baby. The music comes from outstanding artists that you may not have heard before. With a mix of rock, pop, folk…you name it…there’s bound to be something new that floats your musical boat, and all for free! What’s not to like about that?!

The album Free Unicorn was written and recorded in Tokyo. It is very quirky and different (as you’ll be able to tell from the video above) but it is also symbolic, political, industrious and savvy. Rie describes the album beautifully as a ‘small melody from the beat of the earth, taken from a symbol of mythology that is considered to be beneficial in every culture‘.

Optivion’s main influences are Dead Can Dance, Susumu Hirosawa, Led Zeppelin, Bjork, Eberhard Weber, Clink Masell and Sonny Boy Williamson, to name a few. For them, music has always been a ‘gravitation sonic wave‘ for political movement and environmental change. So, that is what they hope their music will achieve, and it certainly does that!

Finally, here is Optivion’s advice for anyone who is just starting out with music:

‘Have fun making and playing original music! It’s like painting your own portrait.’
